Roots & Shoots Rwanda marked World Environment Day 2025 through engaging sessions with students at UNILAK and Sparrow Parents School in Kigali — inspiring young people to take action to protect the environment, animals, and human communities.
The sessions were delivered through Dr. Jane Goodall's vision and the Roots & Shoots approach, which begins with a simple but powerful premise: every individual has the power to make a difference.
At the heart of every session was a single, urgent message:
Human survival depends on interconnected relationships — with one another, with animals, and with nature. A healthy planet is essential for the well-being of all.
Students were not just told about environmental challenges. They were challenged to see themselves as part of the solution — and to act accordingly, starting today, in their classrooms, homes, and communities.
Sessions included interactive discussions on environmental protection and climate action, reflections on the human–nature relationship, and direct engagement with the Roots & Shoots three-pillar framework: caring for people, animals, and the environment as interconnected responsibilities.
As part of the World Environment Day celebrations, the TERA Club from UNILAK also presented recycled plastic dustbins — a practical demonstration that youth innovation can turn waste into solutions. Schools including EP SUSA II and G.S. Nyabirasi received the recycled dustbins to support responsible waste disposal within their communities.
World Environment Day is one date — but the work it represents continues every day of the year. Roots & Shoots Rwanda invests in young people precisely because they will carry this mission forward: into classrooms, into families, into careers, and into the policies and cultures of tomorrow.
Every student who leaves one of our sessions with a deeper sense of responsibility is a seed planted in Rwanda's environmental future.
