RWANDA & TANZANIA, February 2025 — Roots & Shoots Rwanda and Roots & Shoots Tanzania celebrated the 35th Anniversary of the Roots & Shoots movement through a dynamic volunteer exchange program aimed at strengthening animal welfare education and youth collaboration across borders.
The exchange, conducted under the jointly implemented Animal Welfare Project, brought together youth volunteers to share knowledge, practical skills, and successful strategies from their respective countries.
During the visit to Tanzania, a volunteer from Roots & Shoots Rwanda engaged in practical sessions and dialogue meetings with the Roots & Shoots Tanzania Central Zone team.
The volunteer held interactive discussions with students on compassion, responsibility, and proper animal care. Students were encouraged to become advocates for animal protection.
Club members demonstrated remarkable commitment by collaborating on the development of an Animal Welfare Park. Students creatively reused plastics and locally available materials to decorate the park, promoting sustainability alongside animal welfare education.
A highlight of inclusivity — the volunteer observed deaf students who showcased projects such as making envelopes and reusable bags, underscoring that animal welfare education is inclusive and accessible to all.
A roundtable discussion was held with youth leaders from secondary schools and mentors from R&S UDOM. Participants reflected on current challenges facing animal welfare and shared their vision and commitments for the next 35 years of the Roots & Shoots movement.
To mark the anniversary, the volunteer participated in a tree planting activity at Mtemi Mazengo Primary School, where nursery pupils actively took part in planting trees. The volunteer planted a commemorative tree as a symbol of unity, shared history, and long-term commitment to protecting the planet.
We are hope, we are action. 💪🌱
The volunteer exchange demonstrated the strength of regional collaboration in empowering young people to lead change. Together, Roots & Shoots Rwanda and Tanzania continue to advance animal welfare education and nurture a generation committed to compassion, sustainability, and action.
