Roots & Shoots Rwanda celebrated International Wetlands Day 2025 on February 2nd in collaboration with the INES Environmental Club. The event was held under the theme:
"Wetlands and the Young Generation: Empowering for Rehabilitation for a Sustainable Future"
The day brought together young people, community members, and local leaders from Musanze District for two powerful activities.
Participants visited the Nyandungu Urban Wetland Eco-Tourism Park in Kigali, gaining first-hand insight into the ecological importance of wetland ecosystems — the biodiversity they support, the water they purify, and the communities they sustain.
The team carried out a hands-on cleanup of Mugogo Wetland alongside community members and local leaders from Musanze District, removing plastic waste and reinforcing the importance of shared environmental stewardship.
Wetlands are among the world's most productive ecosystems. They filter water, reduce flooding, store carbon, and support extraordinary biodiversity. In Rwanda, wetlands play a critical role in agriculture, water supply, and climate resilience — making their protection a national and global priority.
This event reflects Roots & Shoots Rwanda's commitment to connecting young people with nature, inspiring them to protect the ecosystems that sustain life — and building a generation of environmental champions ready to act.
