Roots & Shoots Rwanda, in partnership with the INES Environmental Club, the Nyabihu Ecosystem Conservation Agency, and environmental clubs from the University of Rwanda – CAFF, conducted a plastic waste cleanup along the shores of Karago Lake in Nyabihu District.
Young volunteers and community members came together to physically remove harmful plastic pollution from the lakeshore — protecting the ecosystem, safeguarding aquatic life, and restoring the natural beauty of one of Rwanda's important water bodies.
The initiative also strengthened local ecosystem protection by mobilizing young people to take active, visible roles in environmental conservation.
Plastic pollution in freshwater ecosystems is a growing threat across Rwanda and East Africa. Lakes like Karago provide water, food, and livelihoods for surrounding communities — and their protection directly affects the health and well-being of thousands of people.
This cleanup demonstrated that youth-led, collaborative action is one of the most powerful tools available to communities facing environmental challenges.
Events like this are at the heart of what Roots & Shoots Rwanda does — mobilizing young people to be the solution, not just witness the problem. Every piece of plastic removed is a step toward a cleaner, healthier environment for people and wildlife alike.
