Roots & Shoots Rwanda joined the national commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi at the Nyamata Genocide Memorial Site — a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognized in 2023 for its powerful testimony of the atrocities committed against the Tutsi people.
The Roots & Shoots Rwanda team visited the Nyamata Memorial Site to participate in the national commemoration. The team gained a profound understanding of the historical events and their lasting impact on Rwanda and on humanity.
The visit concluded with a minute of silence in honor of the victims — a solemn and reflective moment that reinforced the importance of remembrance, education, and the unwavering commitment to peace and unity.
The Roots & Shoots program is built on the values of compassion, respect, and care for all living beings. Genocide is the ultimate expression of the opposite of those values — and remembering its history is an essential act of commitment to ensuring it never happens again.
Roots & Shoots Rwanda believes that environmental stewardship and peacebuilding are deeply connected: communities that care for each other also care for the world around them.
By participating in national commemorations, Roots & Shoots Rwanda honors the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi and reaffirms its commitment to a Rwanda built on remembrance, reconciliation, and a shared future of peace.
