Chimpanzee Habitat Protection Training for Facilitators and Volunteers

About This Event

Roots & Shoots Rwanda conducted a Chimpanzee Habitat Protection Training for facilitators and volunteers working in schools neighboring Gishwati-Mukura National Park — the home of Rwanda's endangered eastern chimpanzee population.

Training Content

The training equipped participants with the knowledge and tools to become effective conservation ambassadors:

• Biology and behavior of eastern chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii)
• Key threats to chimpanzee habitat: deforestation, agricultural expansion, poaching, and habitat fragmentation
• Conservation strategies and sustainable land use practices in the Gishwati-Mukura buffer zone
• How to run effective conservation awareness sessions for school students
• Tree planting methods and agroforestry approaches to restore habitat corridors
• Community engagement techniques for reaching families and village residents

Who Participated

Facilitators and volunteers from the three partner schools — E.P Umubano, G.S Bitenga B, and G.S Nyabirasi TSS — as well as community representatives from surrounding areas.

Eastern chimpanzees are endangered. Protecting their habitat requires not just conservation policies, but a deeply engaged local community that understands why chimpanzees matter — and is empowered to act. This training is the first step in building that community.
